[Words to Image. I chose this image, and this is what it chose to speak to me]
The people of a certain community began to worship a social algorithm. It had an "uncanny way of knowing what we were talking about." Their screens started to suggest this and that, based on their normal viewing activity, baffling them. Little by little these tiny suggestions began to be viewed on a much higher level, something more 'divine.' When two friends shared their hearts desires, back and forth on varies platforms, the algorithms supposed their friendship was something more than they even realized themselves. It altered their relationship statuses and their friends noticed, prompting inquiries.
"I see you're in a relationship with so and so."
"Why do you say this? How do you know?"
They were confused as to how their specifics were known when names were never mentioned. The algorithm had monitored their actions across all platforms within its reach and assumed their unspoken reality, taking it upon itself to modify and make social media official changes at will.
Once the participants stumbled upon these overreaching changes, the assumptions tickled their fancy, and it felt official.
"Wow. I guess we are and now everybody knows it. How on earth? But I guess it's okay to just roll with it."
Reoccurring instances of algorithm assumptions began to be viewed as commonplace. The power of suggestion took root and people of this certain community began to act accordingly, leaning heavily toward the assumptions. A suggested possible purchase was indeed bought. A vacation spot was actually visited. People began to blur the lines on what was an overheard possibility and what they percieved as divine destiny, a prophecy of such. The algorithm could now predict the future. And they were okay with believing this. It gave them comfort that something larger than themselves was in control of their happiness.
The self-brainwashing continued until the entire community placed this algorithm at the top of the list of what should be deciding law to govern themselves. It reached past statutes and bills until it was required worship. Continual acceptance and usage of this algorithm gave it the ability to increase its own power to decide. Its reach, reached even further. The example of this tiny community caught the attention of others, bordering, and spread like wildfire across the nation. And then globally. Men of understanding were put into office who could 'explain' and 'assist' in fulfilling prophecy. Algorithm deciphering at its finest.
The people of a certain community began to worship a social media algorithm. In this, they lost their voice, their freedom, and then their soul. Man became a slave to the very algorithm he had created.
He believed in the lie of the eavesdropping divinity ... and died by the same.
